Pre Windows 3.0
Before Windows 3.0, Windows was very unpopular. And if someone used it, it was mostly used as an app rather than an OS, overall it was not an OS, but a shell for MS-DOS that was booted thru the WIN command. So, to install these versions, you will need MS-DOS first.
MS-DOS can be installed here. Please note that these systems are so old that they cant even be installed on some MS-DOS versions, for example it WONT install on MS-DOS 7.10, not sure about Win 2.0, but Windows 1.0 cant even install on MS-DOS 6.0
This page is in development. Its not finished at all, more will be added.
- 💾💾💾 Windows DR5 (October 31, 1984)- This is the oldest Windows build that still exists and can be downloaded. It stands for "Windows Development Release 5" and was made on October 31, 1984, its older than MS-DOS 3.1! You will need MS-DOS 2 or 3 to run it. DR5 contained sample applications, some with source code. It was published to BetaArchive in 2008.t
- 💾💾💾💾 Windows 1.0 Alpha- The Windows Alpha is very rough and incomplete, similar to DR5. It also includes development tools and source samples.
- 💾💾💾 Windows 1.01 (November 20, 1985)- This was the first public version of Windows. It included a number of apps: Write, Notepad, Paintbrush, Cardfile, Clipboard. Apps were being run from MS-DOS Executive. MS-DOS 2.0 is enough for it, it wont install on MS-DOS 1x because they didnt support hard disks.
